What does it take to turn a bold vision into reality? A South African university asked: How can we meet customer expectations while laying the foundation for a world-class, modern institution? To answer, they turned to Value Management.
In Phase 1, a cross-functional group of senior leaders surfaced 94 core issues, and developed 7 strategic priorities, of which ‘Drive Change’ and ‘Deliver Value’ were the most impactful.
Phase 2 focused on cascading these priorities into the largest division: Operations & Maintenance, home to 1,000+ employees across units like Transport, Retail, and Environmental Services. A new objective was set: achieve 85%+ customer satisfaction. This goal was underpinned by three clear imperatives:
- Understand the Customer (via Value Driver Trees and KPIs)
- Capacitate the Value Chain (through a deep diagnostic of functional bottlenecks)
- Achieve Performance (by documenting roles and accountability through RACI)
These were all anchored around functions and integrated through a new divisional PPMO, enabling focused and consistent execution. Early results include stronger collaboration, greater leadership accountability, reduced silos, and a shift from reactive tasks to intentional, outcome-driven delivery.
