Healthcare systems today are under unprecedented pressure: rising demand, constrained resources, workforce exhaustion, and increasing expectations around quality and safety. In response, healthcare organizations are launching more initiatives, more projects, and more transformation programs than ever before. Yet despite this activity, many strategies fail to translate into sustained improvement in patient outcomes, operational efficiency, or system resilience.

This gap is not primarily a problem of intent or expertise. It is a problem of execution.

In this context, the role of project management in healthcare must be reconsidered. Beyond a technical discipline focused on delivery, project management represents one of the most powerful mechanisms available to healthcare organizations to coordinate action, clarify accountability, and govern change across complex clinical and administrative environments. When applied deliberately, it becomes a driver of organizational development, enabling healthcare systems not only to implement initiatives, but to learn, adapt, and build lasting capacity.

Aligned with the mission of the International Project Management Association (IPMA) Healthcare Special Interest Group to advance best practices, innovation, and collaboration in healthcare project leadership, this session explores how structured project and portfolio management can support strategy execution while strengthening the foundations of healthy healthcare systems. The focus is not on isolated projects, but on how project leadership can improve decision-making, reduce fragmentation, and create value across the organization.

Drawing on applied experience from hospital and community healthcare settings, the webinar will examine practical tools, including project and portfolio structuring, role clarity and accountability matrices, stakeholder and power mapping, and performance indicators, that link project outcomes to organizational learning and capacity building. Particular attention will be given to how these approaches help mitigate change fatigue and burnout by making priorities explicit, reducing overload, and restoring coherence to how change is managed.

Ultimately, this session invites healthcare leaders and project professionals to view project management not as an administrative function, but as a strategic capability, one that directly contributes to better patient outcomes, more efficient operations, and more resilient healthcare systems.
