Waves are endowed with the special and intriguing property of time reversal (TR). The experimental proof of TR involves transmitting waves into a medium, measuring and recording the response, time reversing the recorded response, re-transmitting it into the medium, and observing the waves retrace their original path. The TR of waves transformed the practice of fields such as medicine, ocean acoustics, seismology and telecommunications. The research group at HKUST embarked on their own TR transformation in the water infrastructure field. In this seminar, the speaker will use videos to illustrate the TR property of a wide range of waves and elucidate its fundamental physics. He will narrate how the TR research at HKUST is being used to develop long-range, non-destructive, non-intrusive, low-cost and reliable condition assessment technology for the water infrastructure. He will discuss some of the 15+ implementations of the TR technology in Hong Kong that are being conducted in collaboration with the water supplies department (WSD), the Drainage services department (DSD), and the Airport Authority (AA).
